The VAT number refers to the value-added tax number levied on most goods and services, excluding financial and property transactions. The VAT is usually 20% of the sales. Your VAT number is a unique identification the EU issues to businesses registered to pay this tax. Therefore, you can find your VAT number on the VAT registration certificate the HMRC issued your business.
However, if you cannot locate your EU VAT number, there are other ways you can search for it. There are websites with which you can find company VAT numbers. An EU VAT number is fifteen digits long, containing alphanumeric characters; the first two letters indicate the registered business’s country code. For example, European VAT numbers start with an EU, followed by 13 more characters. Checking that your VAT number is valid is important, especially when you’re a new business. You can confirm a VAT number’s validity by calling the HMRC helpline and using the online VIES (VAT Information Exchange System).
